On July 3, the delivery ceremony of the first batch of batteries of Veken Technology's "GF 100MW/200MWh Sodium Power Project" was held in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province. Chen Yimeng, Secretary of the Xinjian District Party Committee, and other government leaders; Wang Youjia of Shanghai Ronghe Yuanchu Energy Co., Ltd. and other relevant leaders; Chen Liangqin, Chairman and General Manager of Veken Technology Co., Ltd., Han Xinge, Executive General Manager of Veken Technology Energy Storage Division and General Manager of Nanchang Veken Battery, and other senior executives attended the ceremony. This delivery marks another major breakthrough in the field of sodium-ion batteries, demonstrates Veken Technology's strong manufacturing capabilities and reliable delivery guarantees, and demonstrates the company's leading position in the new energy sodium-electric energy storage industry.
The 100MW/200MWh sodium-ion energy storage power station demonstration project in Honghu Economic Development Zone is the first self-built large-scale sodium-electric energy storage project of Guangzhou Development Group, and one of the first batch of new energy storage pilot demonstration projects in Hubei Province. The project is constructed in two phases, with an investment of about 200 million yuan in the first phase and a construction scale of 50MW/100MWh, which has the advantages of short transmission distance and high efficiency. After the project is fully put into operation, the power station will become one of the largest installed capacity of sodium-ion battery energy storage power stations in China, and it is also the first 100 MWh sodium-ion battery energy storage power station in China that is publicly tendered.
After public bidding, PowerChina Hubei Engineering Co., Ltd. won the bid to become the EPC unit of the project, and Shanghai Ronghe Yuanchu Energy Co., Ltd. won the bid to become the system equipment integrator of the project; Veken Technology has won high recognition from all parties involved in the project by virtue of its advanced sodium-ion battery technical indicators, sufficient manufacturing capacity and reliable management and control system, and has become the sodium battery manufacturer of this project. The groundbreaking ceremony of the project was held at the project site of Honghu Development Zone on June 15, 2024, and the relevant leaders of the Honghu Municipal Party Committee and Government, Jingzhou Power Supply Company, Guangfa Group, and representatives of the project construction unit jointly laid the foundation for the project.
Sodium-ion battery is a new type of chemical battery with rapid development of industrialization in recent years. Around 2010, China began to research and develop the technology and industrialization of sodium-ion batteries; Since the beginning of 2021, with the rapid rise in the price of lithium resources and the intensification of people's concerns about the safety of lithium resources, sodium-ion batteries have received widespread attention from the market, and in July of the same year, CATL announced its entry into the field of sodium-ion batteries; In 2022, with the promotion of capital, the industrialization of sodium electricity in China will be rapidly promoted; In 2023, sodium-ion batteries will enter the first year of industrialization, and many sodium battery industry chain enterprises will enter mass production; In 2024, the first year of large-scale application of sodium batteries, large-scale applications will begin to be realized in large-scale energy storage power stations, industrial and commercial storage, two-wheeled vehicles and shared battery swaps, communication base station energy storage and other fields.
The industrialization of sodium-ion batteries has been highly valued by the government and supported by national policies. The state has issued a number of policies to promote the industrialization process of sodium-ion batteries, and industrial policies such as the "Green and Low-Carbon Transformation Industry Guidance Catalogue (2024 Edition)", the "14th Five-Year Plan" for Renewable Energy Development and the "14th Five-Year Plan" New Energy Storage Development Implementation Plan have made it clear that sodium-ion batteries are one of the new energy storage products supported by the state, providing a clear and broad market prospect for the development of the sodium-ion battery industry.
Veken Technology took the lead in the industrialization of sodium electricity as early as 2019, and cooperated with the sodium electricity R&D team led by Professor Ma Zifeng of Shanghai Jiao Tong University to take the lead in developing successful sodium-ion battery products. In 2021, Veken Technology will accelerate the research progress of sodium electricity industrialization, set up a sodium electricity technology research institute, and enrich the high-level R&D team led by many doctors. In 2022, Veken Technology will accelerate the industrialization of sodium electricity, invest in upstream sodium electric material enterprises, and lay out sodium electric mass production lines in Nanchang and Ningbo bases. In May 2023, Veken Technology Nanchang Base built the first GW-level sodium electric production line in China and put it into mass production.
At present, Veken Nanchang base has built two fully automatic sodium electric production lines, with an annual output of 2GWh. As a leading enterprise in the field of sodium electricity, the company is in a leading position in the industry in terms of manufacturing capacity, performance parameters and quality assurance, and has received great attention from the industry.
The sodium-ion battery delivered by Veken Technology for this project, with a capacity of 230Ah, has outstanding advantages such as high safety, high rate performance and long cycle life, and can maintain nearly 85% capacity even at minus 40°C, and has achieved good market response in multiple energy storage and power application scenarios. It is also understood that Veken Sodium has completed a new generation of sodium-ion battery technology with an energy density of 160Wh/kg and more than 6,000 cycles, and its performance indicators continue to lead the industry and will soon be put into mass production.
Veken Technology will continue to increase investment in the R&D and industrialization of sodium electricity, and focus on the development of ultra-low temperature working sodium batteries and large-rate charge-discharge sodium batteries based on the technical characteristics of sodium batteries. The company has formulated the overall plan of Veken Technology Nanchang Sodium Power Base, and the construction of the second phase of the project will start within the year, which will greatly increase the production capacity. After the project is fully completed, Veken Nanchang base will become one of the largest sodium-ion battery production bases in China. It is understood that Veken Technology has obtained the intention order of sodium battery as scheduled, and the market response is strong, indicating the explosive growth potential of sodium battery in the future.
